Special Education-Transition Info

Lets talk about transition plans!

In Michigan, in order for an IEP to be compliant, there is a list of rules that must be followed called the "B-13" checklist.
Here is a link to a PDF that shows all of the rules:

Now, the biggest question is: What does my child want to do, is it within their abilities right now, or is it something they will need to work toward for an extended amount of time in order to reach.  If the goal is something that is going to take a while (given academic circumstances, maturity level of student, motivation etc...), then it might be an idea to seek alternatives to that particular job that your child may be interested in doing while working toward their ultimate goal.

I have to be honest here, and say that many of us grew up thinking we would be working in one particular career path, and often times, that is not the case as we grew up.  Opportunities knocked, and we took them.  Allowing our children to explore their options while having an ultimate goal is really the best way to handle situations where the ultimate goal may be out of reach (at least for a while).

What can you do at home to help your student/child explore their options?  Well, a good place to start is to check out this website:
https://www.bls.gov/careeroutlook/2015/article/career-planning-for-high-schoolers.htm

In this site, there is information for teens, as well as an occupational outlook handbook (also under publications).

Just remember that ultimately our goal at the school is to pair your child up with the right supports and services for them.  If that means they need some job experience with a job coach, help filling out applications, or they need items to make their first job successful, we are there for them!  We have some links to great services whether your student wants to get on the job training, vocational experience and training, or go to college!
